can't look in the eye of the ghost
the person that i loved the most

we signed up for a real tough time
a bitter pill
being born was our first real crime
and we're paying still

in rare times when our minds slow down
i know we can both see these clouds

we got into a sad third act
fire and flood
the ancestors on our backs
they're out for blood

one foot in front of the other
we were never runners
and neither were our mothers

our battles are not even ours
but each day we come home with new scars

still trying to understand
the book they wrote
to throw off the thousand hands
that hold us by the throat
